About Doug Parkinson
There's not many people in the world who can cover a Beatles song and get away with it! Doug Parkinson can! "Doug Parkinson is hard not to notice" - his voice is part of Australia's rock heritage, his imposing physique and his stage presence holds your attention in a vice-like grip.
Doug Parkinson started singing while at school. By 1967 Doug had teamed up with some other musicians to form a psychedelic rock band called The Questions supporting The Who and Small Faces. Later he formed the group Doug Parkinson In Focus. It was with this group that Parkinson recorded The Beatles' Dear Prudence which topped the charts in 1969.
Doug moved to London in 1971 and formed Fanny Adams, who recorded an album and received strong critical acclaim. Doug finally went solo, recording an album No Regrets in 1973, and the hit single Everlasting Love in 1975. In 1978, he was back in the studio fronting the Southern Star Band with Tommy Emmanuel, a project spawning more hits including I'll Be Around (title track) and The Hungry Years. In 1981, Doug recorded the album Heartbeat to Heartbeat featuring the hit duo with Broderick Smith - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore.
Doug Parkinson has conquered the world of music theatre numerous times and played major roles in shows including Tommy, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Ned Kelly directed by Reg Livermore (1976), Jesus Christ Superstar (1983), Soulman (1986) The Motown Story (1988), and Big River (1989), The Big Bopper in Buddy - The Musical (1991-93), Grease - The Arena Spectacular (1998), Happy Days (1999), and the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard Of Oz (2001).
One of the truly versatile talents in Australian music, Doug Parkinson is happiest in front of an audience. Either starring in a hit musical or singing a bluesy soul tune backed by a pack of horns and a crack rhythm section, the fact remains that for four decades he has been Australia’s pre-eminent voice amongst the musical community.
