About Peter Thompson
Peter Thompson's career has been as varied as his passions.
As an 18 year-old calling the horse racing and football in rural NSW, he fulfilled his childhood ambition of becoming a sports commentator, beginning a lifelong association with broadcasting.
Peter is best known for his work with the ABC. In 1978, he hosted This Day Tonight in Tasmania. He was also involved in the launch of the Nine Network's Business Sunday.
In 1997, he presented the community discussion forum, First Wednesday on ABC TV. He concurrently presented Radio National's Breakfast and the Radio National edition of AM from 1994 until 1999.
One of the highlights of Peter's broadcasting career has been the presentation, beginning in 2002, of a series of programs for Big Ideas, Radio National's feature time slot on Sunday evenings titled The Wisdom Interviews. The series generated a strong audience following.
A passionate conservationist, Peter involved himself deeply with the successful campaign to stop the construction of a hydro-electric dam on the Franklin River in Tasmania and wrote two books on the experience - Power in Tasmania and Bob Brown on the Franklin River.
Peter is a masters graduate at Harvard in public administration, and holds an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management.
After several years as Radio National's Breakfast host, Peter has given up 3am starts to present the ABC TV's new series "Talking Heads".
