About Rex Hunt
Rex Hunt developed a love of the sea and everything in it and was actively fishing from the age of seven. Rex's first catch was a prized garfish from the pier in late 1956.
He was a slow starter when it came to football and cricket. He recalls often being the last picked for the side. At 16 Rex realised that his strength and passion lied in football not cricket and so he pursued this. After very swift development through his teens, Rex amassed 202 senior VFL games with Richmond, Geelong and St. Kilda, and played in two premierships with Richmond. He twice headed the goal-kicking list at Richmond and was the VFA leading goal-kicker in 1981 with 110 goals.
When Rex retired from football, he pursued a career in both fishing and football broadcasting. He started in football broadcasting career in 1979 at 3AW, crossing to 3DB until 1988 and then returning to his beloved 3AW in 1989. It continues today on 3AW where it is in its 23rd year.
In 1992 Rex started up a fishing television show called Rex Hunt's Fishing World, screened on Channel Seven in Melbourne. The late night time slot soon proved popular and the show was moved to early evenings on a Saturday where it screened for 13 years.
Rex is a dedicated conservationist and is a tireless worker for the betterment of fishing. In 2004 Rex was honoured on Channel 9's This is your Life for his efforts.
Rex continues today as the number 1 radio broadcaster for AFL on 3AW with his often colourful and very entertaining style. For this Rex has won many prestigious radio awards.
