About Speaker Richard Charlesworth
Richard Charlesworth coached the Australian Women's Hockey Team from April 1993 until after the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
During which time the team won the Champion's Trophy in 1993 Amsterdam), 1995 (Mar del Plata), 1997 (Berlin) and 1999 (Brisbane), the World Cup in 1994 (Dublin) and 1998 (Netherlands) and were gold medallists in the Atlanta Olympics (1996) and Sydney Olympics (2000) and Kuala Lumpuer Commonwealth Games (1998).
He is currently a High Performance Consultant with The Freemantle Dockers and a Mentor Coach with the Australian Institute of Sport.
Richard Charlesworth is a recognised sportsman and a renowned hockey and cricket player. Richard played in approximately 50 cricket matches for Western Australia between 1972 and 1980 making more than 2000 runs.
In 1972 he first represented Australia and later that year had his first taste of Olympic competition at the Munich Games. He captained the Australian hockey team from 1977 to 1984. Richard has played 227 international games with the Australian hockey team and was captain for more than 130 games.
He has been selected for four World Cup teams, achieving 2 bronze and 1 Gold medal and five Olympic teams. Richard was vice-captain of the Australian hockey team which won the silver medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
Richard Charlesworth's sporting ability and his contribution to sport in Australia has been acknowledged in many ways. He was awarded the WA Sportsman of the Year. He received the Advance Australia Award in 1984 for his outstanding services to hockey in Australia.
In the 1987 Queen's Birthdays Honour's list he was made a member of the Order of Australia. Richard Charlesworth is also a doctor of Medicine.
