About Rod Hamill
Marathon rowing champion Rob Hamill has been an international rowing representative since 1986. He is also the author of "The Naked Rower" the best selling book on how he and his fearless partner the late Phil Stubbs won the gruelling Atlantic Rowing Race.
To compete, Rob had to find $20,000 and a rowing partner strong enough mentally and physically to team up with. The team was formed, the entrance money was found, Rob mortgaged his house, and the legend was born.
The Kiwi pair left Tenerife in the Canary Islands on October 12, 1997 in a field of 30 competitors some of which boasted the very latest in hi-tech equipment including satellite communications and the Internet. By comparison the Kiwi's boat was simple and designed for efficiency.
It arrived in a packet and consisted of 23 pieces of plywood. The home comforts were minimal to say the least. The rest is history. They completed the race in 41 days a world record crossing of the Atlantic. 51 days inside the record and 7 days ahead of their nearest competitor.
Rob’s presentation of the trials and tribulations of the Atlantic crossing is inspirational and entertaining. It is a story of preparation, persistence, commitment, and overcoming the mental and physical obstacles and one of courage and dedication. Rob also talks on positive thinking, goal setting, overcoming the odds and winning! His philosophy is as true for business as it is for sport.
