About Mia Freedman
Mia Freedman is the voice of her generation and Australia's most high profile spokesperson for young women. A highly-sought after personality on television, radio and newspapers, Mia made her name in magazines, which continue to be her day job.
Beginning her career doing work experience at Cleo magazine, Mia worked her way up through the ranks until she was offered the editorship of Cosmopolitan at age 24. Over the next 100 issues, she took the magazine to the number one position in both circulation and readership. She was voted Editor of the Year by her peers in the Magazine Publishers Assocation of Australia in 2000.
Her proudest achievement has been her Body Image initiative, whereby Cosmo banned diets and became the only Australian magazine to feature women sized 6-16 in every issue. Mia has been outspoken in her view that the media needs to be more responsible about the body image messages it conveys to young women and has received wide acclaim for this initiative.
In 2001, Mia launched three new magazines: Cosmo Bride, Cosmo Pregnancy and Cosmo Hair & Beauty, which all became number one in their respective categories. In 2003, Mia was appointed editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, Cleo and Dolly which, combined, reach 2.5 million (79% of) young women aged 15-35 every month, making her the absolute expert on this highly sought-after demographic. In 2005, Dolly was voted Magazine Of The Year by the Magazine Publishers Association of Australia.
Mia appears regularly as a commentator on the Today Show, A Current Affair, Mornings With Kerrie-Anne Kennerly, Today Tonight, The 7:30 Report and national radio programs, appearing weekly to discuss a variety of social topics affecting women, everything from career to plastic surgery and relationships.
She writes a weekly column for the Sun-Herald and The Sunday Age and also writes a column for Shop magazine each month. Her first book, The New Black, was released in September 2005.
