About Hayley Lewis
Over her swimming career Hayley Lewis has remained one of Australia's most consistent swimmers with success at all levels of competition including Australian Titles, Pan Pacific Games, Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games and World Championships.
But she is best known by most Australians for winning five gold medals at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games as a 15 year old. After this success she went on to win the 200m freestyle at the world World Championship. Next in 1992, at the Barcelona Olympics Games Hayley brought home two medals - one Silver and one Bronze.
After a tough year in 1996, a time plagued by illness and interruptions to training, Hayley took a respite from swimming. In 1998, after the birth of her first child Hayley joined forces with Jenny Craig Weight Loss Centres as a key spokesperson helping her to get back in shape and encouraging other young mothers to do the same.
Back in top condition, Hayley surprised herself by powering onto her third Olympic team with victory in the 800m freestyle at the Olympic trials in May 2000 but did not qualify in the 800m final. She retired for competition in 2001.
Out of the water, Hayley has embarked on several business ventures including the establishment of her own swim school, a range of fitness equipment and television commentary.
