About Stephanie Alexander
Stephanie Alexander ran the acclaimed Stephanie's Restaurant, an icon of Melbourne fine dining, for twenty-one years. But it hasn't all been as sweet as honey for Stephanie. Her first restaurant, Jamaica House, opened in 1964. It was successful from the customers’ point of view but disastrous personally.
She had a baby to care for as well as a restaurant and her marriage collapsed after two years. She went back to working in libraries for several years but still maintained a passionate interest in food and cooking.
In 1976 Stephanie remarried and with a second daughter, opened Stephanie’s Restaurant in a small shopfront in the Melbourne inner suburb of Fitzroy. Four years later, in 1980, the restaurant moved to a beautiful National Trust building in the outer middle-class suburb of Hawthorn.
By the time the restaurant closed, in 1997, Stephanie had won numerous awards and was regarded as one of Australia's finest cooks and most tireless advocates for the development of the country's burgeoning fine-food industry. From 1997 to 2005, Stephanie, along with several friends, ran the Richmond Hill Cafe & Larder, a popular neighbourhood cafe, renowned for its benchmark cheese retailing.
Stephanie has written ten books. Her signature publication, The Cook's Companion has established itself as the kitchen bible in over 350 000 homes. He other books include: Cooking and Travelling in South West France, Stephanie's Journal, A Shared Table (which was tied to a seven-part TV series), Tuscan Cookbook (the result of a cooking school conducted in Italy with Maggie Beer), Recipes My Mother Gave Me, Stephanie's Seasons, Stephanie's Australia, Stepanie's Feasts & Stories and Stephanie's Menu for Food Lovers.
Stephanie Alexander has an unusual mix of practical skills, creative ability, and lots of energy, which when linked with her ability to communicate has enabled her to achieve a great deal.
