About Priya Cooper
Motivational speaking is a topic well-suited to Priya Cooper. Born with cerebral palsy, Priya has gone on to achieve fame and success both inside out of the pool. Priya Cooper made her international swimming debut when she went to her first Paralympics at the Barcelona Games in 1992 winning three gold and two silver medals and breaking two world and three Paralympic records in the process.
At the age of 18, she was given the honour of carrying the team flag at the closing ceremony in Barcelona in recognition of her incredible performance. Since those successful Games, Priya has continued to exceed in swimming and holds nine Paralympic gold medals and numerous world records.
Priya's personal achievements are many. She has been an Australia Day Ambassador for many years, has been awarded Young Australian of the Year for Sport, received the prestigious Australian Paralympic Committee Merit Award for contribution to the Paralympic Movement and also the Inaugural John Curtin Special Achievement Medal for community service, leadership and vision by Curtin University.
She is also the recipient of an Order of Australia medal and was named 1995 Paralympian of the Year. Priya was the winner of the WA Disabled Sports Association Sports Star of the Year and was also nominated for the Western Australian Sports Champion of the Year to name but a few of her achievements.
Since winning gold at the Sydney Paralympics, Priya Cooper isn't doing countless laps of a swimming pool anymore. Instead, she's making a splash for herself in other areas. Priya has a Bachelor of Health Promotion which she is using to promote sport for people with disabilities.
