About Wayne Pearce

Wayne ‘Junior’ Pearce has been widely regarded as an innovator, both as a player and as a coach.

Wayne played 188 rugby league premiership games for the Tigers between 1980 and 1990. He was captain of the club for seven seasons, including four successive Panasonic Cup Finals (1985-1988) and two grand finals (1988 and 1989).

At representative level, he played fifteen State of Origins for New South Wales. He was the captain of the NSW Blues from 1985 to 1988, including the first ever State of Origin clean-sweep in 1986.

He has also played 18 Test matches for Australia. On the 1982 "Invincibles" Kangaroo Tour, he was voted best player on the tour and in the 1984 Ashes campaign against Great Britain, he was again voted player of the series.

In 1985, he won the Rothman’s Medal (Rugby League’s equivalent of the Brownlow Medal) as the best player in the game. Wayne began his coaching career with the Balmain Tigers in 1994 and retired as Club Coach at the end of the 2000 season.

His efforts as Club Coach were acknowledged by the representative selectors, and he was appointed as the Blues Coach in 1999. After winning the State of Origin series 3-0 as a coach in 2000, he became the only person to both captain and coach a Series clean-sweep against Queensland.

His contribution to Rugby League and the community was cited when he was honoured with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1988.

Since leaving the professional sports coaching ranks, Wayne has been using his considerable knowledge of the psychology of performance to develop motivation and team development programs for the corporate world to improve workplace productivity.

When working with a business, Wayne’s focus is to help it transform from a place where employees just do their job, to a place where employees want to do their very best as individuals and as a team. Wayne still enjoys a presence in Rugby League as Fox Sports commentator.
