About Anne Sargeant
Anne Sargeant began playing netball at the age of eight. At the age of 26, Anne was selected as Australian captain in 1983 and held that honour until her retirement as a player in 1988, leaving behind an outstanding record.
From the age of 10, Sargeant represented her district, Manly-Warringah in NSW. She captain/coached the team to NSW Titles for six years. She played for the NSW Open team from 1978, and was captain from 1982 until 1988.
During that period, NSW won four national championships, 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988. A top rated player from 1975 she burst into international prominence in 1978 when she was selected in the NSW and Australian teams.
That same year she toured England with the undefeated national squad. Anne played for Australia in three World Championships, twice as captain. She helped Australia to equal first place in 1979 in Trinidad, as well as first place in 1983, in Singapore, and runners up in 1987 in Glasgow.
She played in the Tri-Test series against England and Trinidad in 1981, toured New Zealand in 1982, and captained the national side at the inaugural Australia Games in 1984. She captained Australia at the World Games in 1985, the following year she led Australia in a Tri-Test series against Jamaica and New Zealand and on an undefeated tour of England.
In 1988 Australia won the Johnson & Johnson International Series against Trinidad and Tobago. Among many highlights of Anne’s career was a tour of Wales in 1985 when she captained an undefeated Australian side and posted a career personal best of three consecutive 100% shooting games.
She was the NSW Sportswoman of the year in 1985 and was inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions in 1988.
