About Ky Hurst
Limitations are the creation of your mind” is the motto Ironman Ky Hurst lives by. One of the greatest surf life savers of all time, he has won four Australian open ironman championships, four Australian open surf race championships and an incredible 21 Australian gold medals in surf lifesaving.
Originally from Terrigal, NSW, Ky started surfing at the age of two, and began swimming lessons with his swim teacher mother, Kerry, at eight. He turned professional at just 14 – the same year he swam the 1500m at the 1996 Olympic trials against Keiren Perkins and Daniel Kowalski.
Ky made his world championship debut in the 5km, at 17 in Perth in 1998, coming second to Russian great Alexi Akatiev. While still concentrating on surf sports, Ky, at 19, finished 5th in the 1500m and 6th in the 400m freestyle finals at the 2000 Olympic Team Selection Trials. The same year he won the Australian 5km Open Water title and then came seventh at the World Championships in Hawaii.
By 21, he had won his fourth back to back national ironman title – equalling Grant Kenny’s record. In 2004, Ky finished third (behind Grant Hackett and Craig Stevens) - in the 1500m freestyle at the Olympic selection trials –just missing out on a place in Athens.
In 2005, Ky focused on open water events, winning the 5km race at the Australian Championships. In July, he came tenth at that event at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Montreal. Ky, 24 and 183cms tall, has his sights set on the 1500m at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, and then the Beijing Olympics.
