About Ron Barassi

As the face of Australian Rules Football, Ron Barassi has come to epitomise the sporting passion and winning spirit that propels Victorians in their enthusiasm for this home-grown sport.

A formidable presence, both physically and in his obsessive desire to win, Ron made his debut in senior competition at the age of 17 as a ruck rover for Melbourne. By age 21 he had become known for his strength and natural ability as a player and was revered as one of the most feared enforcers in the VFL.

In a playing career spanning from 1953 to 1969 Barassi played a total of 254 games and kicked a total of 330 goals. During his coaching career, Barassi coached over 500 games. Ron played for Melbourne from 1953 - 1964 during which time he played 204 of his total games and kicked 295 goals.

As captain of the Melbourne Football Club from 1961 to 1964, Barassi led the team to another Premiership in 1964. Ron's move to the Carlton Football Club in 1965 shocked the football fraternity and supporters, but he continued to reap success, playing from 1965 - 1969, captaining the team until 1968 and coaching from 1965 - 1971. He coached Carlton to two premierships.

From Carlton he moved to North Melbourne in 1973, his prowess as a coach became fully apparent as he raised the team from the bottom of the ladder to sixth position in the league during his first season. In 1974 North Melbourne proceeded to second place and in 1975 won the Premiership under Ron's leadership.

Ron continued to coach the team until 1980, after becoming the first Life Member of the AFL in 1979 for his outstanding contribution to football as a player and as a coach. He coached the Sydney Swans from 1993 to 1995.
