About Mark Ella
One of the remarkable trio of Aboriginal footballer brothers, Mark Ella played 25 Rugby Union test matches for Australia, and captained the test team in 10 of them. He made his test debut in 1980 in Sydney against New Zealand, kicking a field goal to help Australia to a 13-9 win, and retired at the end of 1984.
During the Wallabies history making grand-slam tour in 1984 in which they became the first Australian side to win all four tests against England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, Mark Ella scored a try in each test a feat never performed before by a touring player.
With his brothers Gary and Glen, Mark toured England with the Australian Schoolboys team in 1977-78, and all three began playing grade Rugby Union in Sydney with the Randwick side in 1978.
Mark was the first of the three to play for Australia, and the only one to become a regular test player. He performed with distinction both as captain and at five - eighth. Ella was a member of the Hong Kong Sevens champion team in 1979, and was named player of the tournament at the Hong Kong Sevens in 1981.
He became Australia's test captain in 1982 on a tour of New Zealand when Australia lost the series although it won the second test. In 1983 he captained Australia on a tour of Italy and France and in home tests against USA, Argentina and New Zealand.
