About Cathy Freeman
With three Commonwealth Gold medals, a silver Olympic medal and a world track title to her credit, Cathy Freeman ranks as one of Australia's most outstanding athletes. Cathy was the first Aboriginal athlete to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal and the first to represent Australia at an Olympic Games.
In 1996 she was the first Australian woman to run the 400 metres in under 50 seconds and in 1997 she became the first Australian woman to win a world track title. Now Cathy has achieved another 'first'. She is the only person in the history of the Australia Day Awards to have been named as both Young Australian of the Year, an honour she received in 1990, and Australian of the Year which she received in 1998.
Cathy was born in Mackay, Queensland. She was just 16 when she was selected to represent Australia at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, where she won gold as a member of the 100 metre relay team. Cathy won double gold at the 1994 Commonwealth Games and in 1996 won silver in the 400 metres at the Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Three subsequent Grand Prix victories and her victory in August 1997 at the world track and field championships in Athens confirmed her status as world champion over 400 metres.
Her 1998 Australian of the Year Award honours Cathy's outstanding achievements as an athlete. It also recognises her sportsmanship, dedication and commitment to providing a positive role model to upcoming athletes.
