About John Konrads
John Konrads, with his sister, rewrote the world swimming record book in the late 1950s, their feat over 14 world long course records between them.
Latvian born, John was seven and Ilsa five when they came to Australia. Both went on to represent Australia at the Olympic Games, John winning a Gold medal in the 1500m freestyle in Rome in 1960. John was selected for three Olympics and swam in two of them.
He was 14 when selected as a reserve in the squad at the Melbourne Games in 1956: he competed in Rome four years later and in Tokyo in 1964. John’s Olympic medal tally was one gold and two bronze, all of them won in Rome.
When John prepared for the 1960 Games he held eight world records from 200 metres to 1650 yards. In 1959 he won every Australian freestyle title. He also won the Japanese and French National Championships in 400 and 1500 metres in 1958, as well as the American NCAA titles for 500 yards and 1650 yards in 1963.
John and Ilsa Konrads were at their record breaking best in 1958, the year of the Empire (Commonwealth) Games in Cardiff in which John won three Gold medals; in the 440 yards, 1650 yards and the 4x220 yards relay.
He is a company director operating an Aquatic & Fitness Centre and consults in Human Resources.
