About Wally Lewis
Wally Lewis' first grade career in Rugby League kicked off in Brisbane in 1978 with Valleys when he scored three tries as an 18 year old.
During a career that spanned 15 years Wally has made 301 first grade appearances with five clubs: Valleys, Wynnum-Manly, Wakefield Trinity, Broncos and Seagulls.
From the moment Wally Lewis stepped out alongside rugby league legends such as Arthur Beetson, Johnny Lang, Kerry Boustead and Rod Reddy in State of Origin No. 1 back in 1980, a new era in Rugby League in Queensland was born.
As Captain of the Maroons from 1981 to 1991 Wally went on to become a legend and earned celebrated nicknames as "the King", "the Emperor of Lang Park" and the even "the High Priest of the Spectacular".
In Queensland, Lewis was State of Origin football! In 1993 and 1994 he was the Queensland Origin coach. Wally Lewis became, and still is, an inspiration to so many, both young and old. His magnificent feats on the football field will never be forgotten.
He will always be remembered for his ability to control a football game, conjure tries from the inconceivable, inspire his team mates, frustrate the opposition, and infuriate opposing fans, bullish tackling, classic cover defence and a passing game that redefined the sport.
Wally Lewis joined Channel Nine Queensland in 1999 as sports presenter for National Nine News.
