About Karni Liddell
Karni Liddell is a former World Record holder and she currently holds Australian Records in all her contested events.
She has represented Australia in swimming at the Atlanta Paralympic Games in 1996 and was a part of the Number one team at the Sydney 2000 Games. She returned home from both Games with medals.
Karni is a successful athlete, but more importantly has an inspirational and amazing story to tell. At 12 months of age, Karni was diagnosed with a degenerative disease labelled Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
Her parents were told by numerous specialists that she would not walk or crawl, let alone reach her teenage years. However, instead of listening to these "experts", Karni's parents soon realised that one of the greatest pleasures in life is achieving things people say can't be done!
They began a rehabilitation program invented themselves. Karni's parents had her doing everything from horse riding at two, trampolining at three, and then of course swimming.
Swimming became more than just a therapy, it became a passion. A passion in which, Karni, her parents and even the specialists believe lies the reason why she is alive and not only walking, but training around 5 hours every day.
