About Greg Matthews
An Australian cricketing icon throughout the 1980s and 90s, Greg Matthews was an exuberant all-rounder with a special mix of flair and determination.
After playing his first match for NSW the previous summer, Greg made his debut for Australia in the 1983 Boxing Day Test against Pakistan. The summer of 1985-86 saw Matthews emerge as an important player in a difficult period for Australia. Two Test centuries against New Zealand and one versus India underlined his qualities as a batsman.
The summer of 1985-86 saw Greg emerge as an important player in a difficult period for Australia. Two Test centuries against New Zealand and one versus India underlined his qualities as a batsman.
The bowling highlight of Greg’s career came soon after, taking ten wickets for the match in the famous Tied Test against India. In furnace-like conditions, Greg bowled almost 70 overs and took the final wicket of the match.
Greg finished his Test career with a batting average of 41, placing him among Australia's all-time top 40 batsmen. At domestic level, Greg was a key part of many NSW Shield and one-day triumphs. He took 417 of his first class wickets while playing for the Blues, a state record that places him ahead of greats such as Lawson, O'Reilly and Benaud.
Greg remains heavily involved in cricket as a playing coach. Highly sought after as a speaker, Greg’s natural flair as a cricketer has transferred to his work as a polished and insightful media performer.
He can currently be heard alongside Channel Nine's voice of Rugby League and swimming, Ray Warren, as co-host of Triple M's Dead Set Legends.
